Is Davido’s BET Award a sign of good fortune for FIFA’s Super Eagles?

Nigerian international artiste, Davido, has been awarded BET’s Best International Act. The prestigious honour for Davido also reflects on BET’s momentous decision to discontinue the awards for African artistes in a separate category portraying a more inclusive award ceremony henceforth. There had been a separate award session for artistes outside of North America until last year, and the award presentations were usually done backstage. Davido was nominated alongside J Hus, Casper Nyovest, Tiwa Savage, Booba, Dadju, Distruction Boyz, Fally Ipupa, Niska, Stefflon Don, and Stormzy – all of whom are artistes with international acclaim.

 

Davido  was applauded as he walked up the stage of Microsoft Theatre, Los Angeles, California,  to receive his award. But beyond that, he proved himself worthy as he raved about Nigeria’s exotic culture, fashion, and music. He emphasized a collaborative approach to music between African artistes and international artistes, while also acknowledging Africa’s rich culture and legacy.

The BET awards were established in 2001 to celebrate African Americans and American minorities who are burgeoning in music, sports, theatre, and other fields of entertainment on a yearly basis. Without a doubt, music and sports unite, and the BET awards celebrate both. What is more interesting is how this singular act has proved to the world what creative potentials Nigerians, and Africans generally, are capable of. Davido’s BET award victory comes two days before Nigeria’s last Group match against Argentina in the ongoing 2018 World Cup competition in Russia.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria, as they are fondly called, were off to a bad start having suffered a two-goal defeat against Croatia. For some reasons, an international victory for one of Nigeria’s finest artiste might just be a precedence for the Super Eagles as they slug  it out for a place in the Round of 16 against the Albiceleste boys of Argentina. This has created heightened emotions for some Nigerians as they anticipate a superb performance from the Super Eagles.

Would the Super Eagles be able to prove their mettle in their last Group Game on Tuesday? Only time will tell, but at least Nigerians can anticipate an impressive performance as a continuum from their last group game. Any victory that gives Nigeria a good image is, indeed, worth hoping for.
